“Geneest deze decubituswond onder deze behandeling wel of niet?”

Given the current treatment, is this pressure ulcer healing, or isn’t it?

This is the question often posed to both practitioner and patient. Measuring the decrease in wound size with serial pictures, with a ruler next to the wound, only works for surface wounds. 3D cameras only work for crater-shaped wounds. However, in three-quarters of all pressure ulcers undermining of the wound edges is involved and this methods do not suffice. In a quarter of the ulcers, undermining is even bigger than the length and/or the width of the wound itself.*

It is for this reason that we developed the DECU-STICK system. It measures, records, and predicts the healing of pressure ulcers. The DECU-STICK is a sterile cotton swab which enables us to measure the length, width, depth, and undermining of a wound.

Pressure ulcers can be divided in surface, crater-shaped, and undermined wounds or  fistulas

There are DECU-STICK’s with a centimetre scale printed on the packaging but any sterile cotton swab and a ruler can be used.

By using the "Wound Treatment Registration Form, which can be downloaded free of charge from this website, one can see at a glance whether a wound is becoming smaller or not. On this form one can also record the treatment used every week.

Usually, after four measurements, one is already able to predict with a reliability of more than 95% whether, given a particular treatment, a particular wound will close or not, and if not, when it is expected to heal.*

The DECU-STICK, therefore, is a quick, reliable, user-friendly, and cheap tool to measure the size of wounds, and to record and predict healing. It can be used in hospital, in the outpatient clinic, or at home. Moreover, it is simple enough to be used not only by doctors and nurses but, if necessary, also by carers without a medical or nursing background.
